About Us

The Vidya Rani Convent in Chittapur is a branch of the Bethany congregation. In 1972 this congregation was started to provide primary education through formal school. Borne to serve the local needs, the Jyothi Seva Kendra Trust was formed in 1981 to address the prevailing challenges of poverty, malnutrition, health and sanitation, illiteracy and unemployment.

In 1998, after many significant achievements, the life of the Jyothi Seva Kendra congregation ("The sisters of the little flower of Bethany") witnessed another new accomplishment – touched by the committed services of the sisters and the staff, a German sponsor and regular visitor to the center, Dr. Michael Ohm, a dentist by profession, started a dental clinic to address the oral health needs of the people of this entire taluka. 

On completion of the building phase, the “Dr. Ohm Dental Clinic”, otherwise known as the Dr. Ohm Indo German Hospital, was inaugurated in 2008. This multipurpose hospital has 25 beds and renders health services for patients affected by tuberculosis, HIV, cataract patients and also addresses child diseases and general health problems. This is the only clinic in the entire taluka of Chittapur and offers highly subsidized dental treatment to all, including free treatment to the needy and poor, as well as to the school children. 

The Dr. Ohm Indo German Hospital has two well-equipped operation theaters. Twice a year a team of doctors from Germany visit for one month to offer free operating services for all general surgery cases, as well as reconstruction burn cases, cleft lip and cleft palate surgery. 

The Dr. Ohm Indo German Hospital remains open throughout the year under the special direction of our Indian doctor, Dr. Vishwalatha.

Twice a year - in February and November - our teams from various medical faculties travel from Germany to Chittapur to do voluntary work at the Dr. Indo German Hospital. The urgently needed operations range from extensive burns, cleft lip and palate, through to plastic and general surgery.  

Our teams work closely with the local doctors and nursing staff to ensure a continual knowledge and know-how transfer.
